Have you ever wondered why some people seem to breeze through life while others face challenge after challenge — despite trying just as hard? The ancient Vedic concept of karma holds the answer.

Karma Is Not Just ‘Good Vibes and Bad Vibes’
The word karma comes from the Sanskrit root kri, meaning ‘to do’ or ‘to act.’ In Vedic philosophy, karma refers to the entire law of cause and effect that governs human existence — not just in this life, but across multiple lifetimes.
According to Vedic texts, karma is first divided into three broad categories:
1. Akarma — The State Beyond Karma
Akarma is the state of a person who has reached complete union with the Divine — a state of samadhi or deep spiritual realisation. For such a person, there is no more ‘doing’ in the karmic sense. They act without ego, without attachment, and without desire for results. This is the state of liberation — the ultimate goal of spiritual evolution.
2. Karma — Action That Binds or Frees
Karma in its middle category refers to ordinary human action — the day-to-day choices, deeds, and intentions that either move us toward liberation or deepen our entanglement in the cycle of birth and death. Every thought, word, and deed creates a karmic imprint that influences our future experiences.
3. Vikarma — Action Against Natural Law
Vikarma refers to actions that go against dharma — natural, moral, and cosmic law. This includes actions that harm or disrespect parents and ancestors, damage family bonds, harm society, or deny the dignity of other beings.

The Four Types of Karma You’re Carrying
Sanchit Karma — Your Karmic Bank Account
Sanchit karma is the entire collection of karmic imprints from ALL your past lives — every action, intention, and choice across every incarnation you’ve ever had. Think of it as a vast cosmic account ledger — everything is recorded.
Prarabdha Karma — What’s Written for This Life
Prarabdha is the portion of your Sanchit karma activated for this particular lifetime — your destiny. It governs the circumstances you were born into, your core relationships, your health patterns, and the major events that seem to find you no matter what you do.
Kriyamana Karma — Your Power in the Present
Kriyamana karma is the karma you are creating RIGHT NOW — through your thoughts, words, and actions in this present life. This is where your free will lives. Every act of kindness, generosity, honesty, and service you perform today becomes a seed for future experience.
Agami Karma — Seeds for Future Lives
Agami karma is the future karma generated by your present actions — what you’re planting today that will bloom in lifetimes to come. The four types work in a continuous cycle: Sanchit → Prarabdha → Kriyamana → Agami → (adds back to Sanchit).
